THE CHARTERED INSTITUTE OF ARBITRATORS

EAST MIDLANDS BRANCH

(Chairman:  Bill Fisher)

BRANCH NEWSLETTER

March 2003

CHAIRMAN'S NOTE

Branch activities are being planned in order to provide CPD for our members and your attention is drawn to the latter pages of this Newsletter where you should also find details of the West Midlands Branch events. This follows a successful East/West Midlands committee meeting where the sharing of information was thought useful for members of both Branches. One other proposal to come out of the meeting is that we hope to organise a Joint East/West Conference later in the year.

A successful Mock Mediation, was held at the Nottingham Law School on 24 January, attended by over 50 delegates. Our thanks go to all who participated and to David Mitchell, of Harvey Ingram Owston, a mediator who acted as Narrator.

Contrary to what you may have seen in the National Newsletter, the Mock Arbitration at Leicester Law School is to take place in May 2003. It is hoped we can attract the services of HH Judge Thornton from the TCC and we await his confirmation before the dates and times of the event can be published.

I would also draw your attention to the Annual Branch Dinner, being held this year at the Yew Lodge Hotel at Kegworth on 16 April 2003. Guest of Honour will be Tony Canham, President of the Chartered Institute – a welcome return to the Branch. Guest speaker sees another welcome return for Tom Sutton. Some of you will remember he gave a very well received speech at our Dinner at the Donington Thistle, some years ago.

Please ensure you reserve your table as soon as possible.

You should receive, or have already received notification of the Branch AGM. Please take time to study the papers and make whatever nomination or request you wish within the specified time limits. We always welcome new committee members and new ideas for events and CPD.

HON. SECRETARY'S REPORT

BANK BALANCE

The bank balance at present stands at £6102.04.

The Mock Mediation presentation held in January at the Nottingham Law School, produced payments amounting to £1671.00 and this has been paid into the bank. It is not included in the above bank balance figure as the cheques will not yet be cleared.

The costs relating to the Mock Mediation are not known to me at the time of writing this report, so a profit figure can not be given at this stage.

A committee meeting is to be held on the 25th February and there will therefore be further costs to deduct from the bank balance in due course.

V.A.T.

The VAT return for the Quarter ending 31st December 2002 has been completed and submitted to HQ

ANNUAL RETURN

We now have both deposit and current accounts with Alliance Leicester. The income from the Mock Mediation has been paid into the Alliance Leicester current account.

Arrangements are now being made to transfer the money held at Barclays to the Alliance Leicester deposit account.
