THE CHARTERED INSTITUTE OF ARBITRATORS

EAST MIDLANDS BRANCH

(Chairman:  Bill Fisher)

BRANCH NEWSLETTER

July 2003

CHAIRMAN'S NOTE

We are now entering the years’ events, approaching the summer break, and I suggest you keep an eye on the web site for information about forthcoming events. You may not get a hard copy of notices if you have given your e-mail address to the PRO or to Roy Pickavance.

Recently we have produced two very successful seminars in conjunction with the RICS Dispute Resolution Faculty. The first, organised by Jeffrey Rosenthal, was the Mock Mediation, in Nottingham. The second, recently was the Mock Arbitration in Leicester, when we had HH Judge Anthony Thornton acting as Arbitrator. We also had our Director General, Mr Dair Farrar-Hockley present to witness our continuing aim of promoting the use of dispute resolution services within our Branch area. Both events were well attended and reviews on both were good.

We have a Mock Adjudication coming up in June, in Nottingham, and this promises to be an equally well produced event. See the web site for detailed information.

Our thanks are due to all those who are involved with the preparation and production of these events.

Shortly we will all receive information on the Agenda for Change, for the Institute. You may remember notice was given in the recent Institute Newsletter. The Agenda for Change stems from the Strategic Review of the Institute published in 2000, and prepared by the Director General and the Executive Board. The proposals are now about to be sent to each Branch and also to each member for comment as part pof the consultation process. There are very good reasons for the Review, and for changes to be made, as the influence made by the Institute increases throughout the world. There are now more “overseas” members than within the UK.  Further, the Charter and Rules of the Institute need updating and there may be the need for a change in the name of the Institute to reflect the increasingly broad range of services offered by members of the Institute.

Please take time to study the proposals and if you have comments send them either direct or preferably to the Branch Committee who will be responding on behalf of the Branch, so we can take your views into account.

Comments can be sent to our Hon Sec via his email and should be sent so that we receive them before the committee has to respond. The dates for responses will no doubt be published with the consultation document.

We hope to invite the Director General to visit the Branch to discuss the proposed changes, probably during late July or August. Keep an eye on the web site for details.

Best Wishes,

Peter Dickinson

Branch Chairman

The current account stands at £499.05, whilst the deposit account stands at £5978.02.

GRANT from HQ

We have received £876.48 from HQ for the first of the half yearly payments. An adjustment on the next payment will be required as HQ charged for stationary that was not ours.

VAT

VAT returns have been completed and returned on time to HQ.

FUNCTIONS

A mock Mediation was held at Nottingham Law School in January as previously reported. The event left the Branch with a profit of £648.15 and this figure takes account of the invitation to Mr. & Mrs. Mitchell to attend the Branch's Annual Dinner in recognition of the time and effort given by Mr. Mitchell to this event

The Annual Dinner was held at the Yew Lodge in April. This resulted in a loss of £248.65, which was considerably less than for other recent years. A loss was anticipated by your committee, as support from Branch members is usually poor and this year proved to be no exception. The committee considered however that the event being the main PR event of the year, that it had to be done properly.

A demonstration Arbitration was held at De Montfort University in May, but financial details are not available at this time.
