One of the more significant events of the year
to date has been the joint committee meeting with the West Midlands Branch. The
aim was to discuss how each Branch is organised and see whether there were
lessons for each Branch to learn. I think both Branches obtained useful
information which no doubt will be discussed in the near future.
Bill Fisher and Peter Westlake attended the
Branch Officers’ Conference at the Institute Headquarters recently and there
will be a report in due course.
We are now entering the year’s events, after
the summer break, and I suggest you keep an eye on the web site for information
about forthcoming events. You may not get a hard copy of notices if you have
given your e-mail address to the PRO or to Roy Pickavance.
Shortly after the Christmas break you will be
receiving notice of the AGM and the elections to the Committee. You must make
your nominations in good time and on the appropriate form if they are to be
taken into account.
My best wishes to you all for the festive season.

The main part of the meeting was taken in
discussions concerning the Constitutional Review and whether this should be a
part review of the existing Constitution or a root and branch review of the
whole Constitution.
The proposals are for a decision at the next
Council meeting but it is proposed that the review should include only a
modernisation of the existing Charter, Byelaws and Regulations, and to include
matters such as a change of name for the Institute and the introduction of
Chartered designations for Mediators and Adjudicators.
The original sub-committee is to be assisted
by Institute staff.
The 72 year Rule, by which the Institute
would not appoint members as Arbitrators etc after they achieved the age of 72
was abolished.
The next Council meeting will be held on 3
December 2002.
