THE CHARTERED INSTITUTE OF ARBITRATORS

EAST MIDLANDS BRANCH

(Chairman:  Bill Fisher)

BRANCH NEWSLETTER

January 2002

CHAIRMAN'S NOTE

Happy New Year.

Since the last Newsletter the committee and the Events and PR Working Party have each met to further the aims and duties of the Branch.

The Annual Conference held at the National Motorcycle Museum on 7 December 2001 proved a successful event, despite only two members from the East Midlands Branch attending. Those 60 delegates who did attend received a series of six presentations on the merits and faults of arbitration, adjudication litigation mediation and expert determination from experienced and informed speakers

Jeffrey Rosenthal (Branch PRO) and Gary Martin (RICS Dispute Resolution Faculty Board member) have arranged a Demonstration Arbitration in February to be held at the Nottingham Law school. One of the presenters will be His Honour Judge Brunning, from Nottingham County Court. This again promises to be an important event in the Branch Calendar. Please look for further details in the Newsletter or on the web site.

There is also an Adjudication Legal Update and Demonstration planned for Lincoln on 17 April when Richard Brackenbury and Robert Dorrington will make what promises to be an up to the minute presentation.

All details of Branch Events are of course posted on the Branch web-site.

The new Branch Directory should now be with you and is being circulated to suitable contacts. If you would like to obtain more copies for your office please contact John Evans, the Hon Sec.

The Branch Annual Dinner and President’s visit is arranged for 21 March 2002 and will be held at The Village Hotel, Chillwell, Nottingham.  I would be grateful if you will now enter this date in your diary to continue the support for your committee that you have shown in the past. Further details and a booking form have been circulated and are attached to this Newsletter. You are invited to book early to assist those making the arrangements. If you have never attended our Branch Dinner before – try supporting your chairman and committee and come to meet the President, Karen Gough. The Dinner usually provides a relaxing and entertaining evening for both ladies and gentlemen.

BRANCH PRO REPORT

It has been a quiet time for Press Releases, as the Institute’s Public Relations Officer left at the end of September, and his successor has only just been appointed.

A new Online Dispute Resolution Service has just been launched in conjunction with Which? Web Trader, the Consumer’s Association online shopping hallmark scheme. This should be publicised nationally in January, and will be followed up by local press releases.

Several more talks have been given to Rotary Clubs, but no one has responded to my request for suggestions and contacts with other groups.

The presentation on ADR to the Northamptonshire Law Society attracted an audience of 13. This was not a successful series, and we are looking for other ideas to promote the Institute to the legal profession. Suggestions would be welcome.

The half-day Demonstration Arbitration has now been arranged for Thursday 28 February at Nottingham Law School lecture theatre, and is being run as a joint event with the RICS Dispute Resolution Faculty. It will be preceded by a networking buffet lunch from 1.00 p.m. Details have been circulated by e-mail, and further notices and booking forms are available from either John Evans or myself.

We have made arrangements for a Legal Update and Mock Adjudication at the Grand Hotel in Lincoln on Wednesday 17 April. Notices and Booking Forms are attached to this newsletter.
