Welcome to the 2000/2001 session of the East Midlands Branch
At the AGM, on 13 April,
the new Branch Committee was elected and the Officers have since been
identified – some old some new! Peter Dickinson and myself continue as Hon
Secretary and Chairman respectively, but we have a new Hon Treasurer in Bill
Fisher (Roger Fountain having retired), and a new Public Relations Officer in
Jeffrey Rosenthal (a role that Peter Dickinson has undertaken in the past)
The attendance at the AGM
was somewhat disappointing but those who did turn up had an excellent
presentation from Smith Bernal, of their LiveNote system and on a new tape
recording and transcription service called “Talk Write Back” run by a parallel
company. Members may be interested to know that Smith Bernal are now making
their software available free for use off-line.
The Annual Dinner, at the
Donington Thistle Hotel, was a very pleasant occasion, with 75 attending (give
or take a few absences due to illness) and I am very grateful to those who
supported the event. It was a pity that the President, Neil Kaplan, was unable
to be present, but the evening went well just the same. At the Dinner we made a
small presentation to Roger Fountain, on his retirement, to mark the many years
of service he has given to the Branch, not only as Hon Treasurer but also as a
former Chairman.
Looking forward, we have
a continuing programme of events – see attached details – and I hope that many
of you will take the opportunity of getting involved. While promoting our
activities to kindred professionals we always learn something ourselves and
have the added bonus of networking with others practising in the field.
As you will see, we also
plan to run an Arbitration Workshop, or Surgery, an Expert Witness Seminar and
an evening Informal Dinner Discussion with Eric Mouzer (“Mr Macob”) – guests
will be particularly welcome at this event.
As always, your committee
is anxious to hear from you with comments, requests or suggestions on
activities past or future – telephone or e-mail facilities make it very easy –
just lift the ‘phone or click on the button!
With best wishes for a
prosperous 2000.
CIARB WEB SITE
Visit the CIArb web site on http://www.arbitrators.org.
Members can link their own web sites to this should they wish.
The Branch web site is being prepared by Roy Pickavance and it can be accessed
via this link. It will give detail of all the officers and will shortly also give the programme of
events with a reply system for easier reservations of events.
During the last year the
committee has forged and maintained regional links with: The RICS, the RIBA,
the ICE, the CIOB, the ASI, Law Societies, Business Links and Chambers of
Commerce all to further the awareness and aims of Arbitration and Adjudication
under the Chartered Institute. The Branch is currently presenting “A Practical introduction to Arbitration
“ to a number of these organisations.
Replies and responses to
the Enquiry form have now been received and preparation of the New Branch
Directory is in hand.
