BRANCH NEWSLETTER

Autumn 2000

CHAIRMAN'S NOTE

We are just getting into the busy autumn session of institutional activities and CPD events, and I hope that you will make the effort to support your committee and gain from the experience of networking with your fellow professionals. The details of the programme are set out below.

You will see that the Annual Branch Dinner is set for 22 March 2001, when we shall entertain the President Dr Nael Bunni. As has now become the custom, we shall have an excellent meal, probably at a new venue (to be announced shortly) and we shall have an entertaining speaker to round off the event. An application form will be included with the next issue.

You will see below a note on our new BRANCH WEB SITE – I commend it to you and to the Chartered Institute’s site to which it is linked. You will see that it is intended to develop the site to your advantage and there is the facility for you to arrange a link to your own site. It is intended that you should visit it regularly to check latest events and CPD. Let us have your comments – there are e-mail links provided for on-line comments.

In conjunction with the web site, Peter Dickinson is updating the Branch Directory and. If you have not already done so, I urge you to let Peter have your latest details.

At a recent Committee meeting, we had a visit from Mr. Dair Farrar-Hockley, the Secretary General. We had a useful discussion and subsequently he has presented his Business Plan to the Executive Board. There are some exiting plans afoot, so keep your ear to the ground!!

Finally, I would like to welcome Mark Thomas to our committee. Mark is a General Practice Chartered Surveyor from Lambert Smith Hampton in Northampton, and, having volunteered, has been co-opted onto the committee for the remainder of the year. Should any other members like to know more about our work, or feel moved to volunteer to help spread the workload, you will be very welcome.

Remember – we are only a phone call, or a button click away.

HON SECRETARY'S REPORT

New Members.

Since the last publication we have been pleased to welcome new members:

J Oni – Nottingham

G Murena – Leicester

W J Myles - Derbyshire

CIARB web site

Visit the CIArb web site on http://www.arbitrators.org. Members can link their own web sites to this should they wish.

The Branch web site is now published and can be accessed via www.CIArb-EM.org a domain name which the Branch has purchased.

The site gives details and contacts for all the committee and Officers, details of Past Events, (along with speakers’ papers where these are available) details of Future Events and a fax back booking form.

There are links to the CIArb web site and in time we hope to have links to other kindred professions.

Members are invited to link their own web sites to our site as well as the CIArb site. This can be achieved on payment of a small annual fee of £10.00 +VAT– details of which can be obtained from me.

Members’ details are also to be published.

Using the replies I received from the membership, full details of only those who returned the Directory Questionnaire will be published. For those who did not return the form, only names and professions will be published – exactly as contained within the Branch Handbook.

If you did not return the questionnaire and want your full details published on the web site, return the form now. If you’ve lost it, e-mail me and I’ll send you another one.

The small Web Site Working Party has put in an enormous amount of work to become one of the first Branches with their own web site and thanks are due to Roy Pickavance for his help.

THE BRANCH MEMBERS DIRECTORY - 2000

Replies and responses to the Enquiry Form have now been received and preparation of the New Branch Directory is in hand. The publication has been delayed whilst we completed the web site so as to ensure the

information published was comparable. Now the web site has been published, the publication of the new Branch Handbook will proceed. Members who indicated they wished to advertise in the handbook will be contacted shortly.

LINKS WITH ALLIED PROFESSIONS

During the last year the committee has forged and maintained regional links with:

The RICS, the RIBA, the ICE, the CIOB, the ASI, Law Societies, Business Links and Chambers of Commerce all to further the awareness and aims of Arbitration and Adjudication under the Chartered Institute. The Branch is currently presenting “A Practical introduction to Arbitration” to a number of these organisations.

EMAIL CIRCULATION.

Most committee papers, communication with HQ and inter officer contact is now done by email. We would like to extend this to communicate with members and to distribute the Newsletter. Not only will this save costs but should ensure easier and quicker communication.

If you have not already done so please let me have your email address. Unless you advise otherwise this will only be used for circulation of Branch information and the address will not be published.

Send me your details by e-mail.

BRANCH TREASURER’S REPORT

I would first like to thank our treasurer of many years, Roger Fountain, for all the work he has undertaken on behalf of the Branch over those years.

The Branch finances are in a healthy state with the balance standing at £4407.20 at the end of September. I cannot foresee any event which is likely to substantially deplete this healthy situation. The Branch will normally support the Annual Branch Dinner and this year we have engaged the services of a professional speaker which will be relatively expensive. Your support however will not only help in the costs but you will benefit by taking part in an enjoyable and pleasant evening.

BRANCH PRO REPORT

My objective as Branch Public Relations Officer is to promote the concept of Arbitration as a means of resolving commercial disputes to as wide an audience in the business community as possible I want to change the impression that arbitration is only used in construction-related industries.

So far this year we have made presentations to Law Societies in Nottingham, Leicester and Lincoln, and Northampton is arranged for next month.

These presentations comprise introductory talks given by three speakers on Arbitration generally; the Arbitration Act 1996; Appointment Procedures and the range of Procedural Options. These talks have been backed by PowerPoint slides and last for about one hour in total, followed by questions.

The second half of the programme is a scripted Demonstration Arbitration, requiring 5 participants. This runs for just over an hour. Our thanks are due to the volunteers who have given up their time to help.

An abbreviated talk has been given to a Rotary Club and another is arranged for next month.

We have recently circulated the Chamber s of Commerce within our area to offer similar presentations, or adapted versions, to their members and I am currently discussing possible dates for early next year with Leicester and Northampton.

You may be aware that the Institute has recently introduced a Commercial Arbitration Scheme, with a cost control feature and a scale of fees dependant on the sums in dispute. I am sure this will help to increase the use of Arbitration where it is not required by a Contract or under an Agreement. I hope to issue a Press Release on this to the business pages of the local media shortly.

If any members would like to assist with the presentations, or arrange one themselves to a local contact group, please let me know.

COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE’S REPORT

Council has just approved the adoption of the new Secretary General’s Strategic Review paper – a five year rolling programme which will have an effect on all members and especially on Branches and Panel members.

A questionnaire is to be sent out with the Institute November Newsletter. You are strongly advised to check and read the document carefully before replying.

The Branch Committee will be considering the proposals carefully at their next committee meeting.
